IIThe friendship recession

The places where friendships used to happen are mostly gone.

01

The institutions that used to make friendships are losing their force. They’re not gone — they’re just thinner. College touches fewer people the way it used to. Local clubs draw smaller crowds. The throughlines that used to put strangers in the same room are quieter than they were a generation ago.

02

Remote work dissolved ‘coworkers nearby’. The lunch table was where weak ties became strong ones. For most knowledge workers, the lunch table is now a Slack channel. That’s not the same.

03

Hobbies-as-community require you to already have the hobby. “Go join a run club” is a plan for people who already run. Showing up cold is hard. Most people don’t.

04

In 2023 the US Surgeon General declared loneliness a public health crisis. The effect on mortality is comparable to smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. This isn’t a vibe — it’s a measurable public-health emergency, and almost nobody has a coherent answer for it.

We need new throughlines to put humans in the same room as humans. The brands and memberships a person chooses are one of the few remaining authentic signals of their values — and one of the most underused.

Bring your people together.
The way clubs used to.

IIIThe founder

“If I were to meet eight other interesting young men who are Fuel Meals subscribers, that would be cool. I would actually enjoy that.”

The founder, on why this product exists
IVPicture this

What it actually looks like when the thesis works.

It’s a Tuesday in Portland. A 31-year-old woman opens an email from Fuel Meals, a subscription she’s had for a year. The subject line isn’t about a new flavor or a holiday discount. It reads: We think you’d get along with another member.

The message describes him in careful, anonymous terms. He’s training for his first ultramarathon. He cooks most of his own meals. He cares about sustainable sourcing the way she does. He lives in her city. She says yes. Two days later, he says yes too. The brand reveals the names, sends both of them a short icebreaker, and gets out of the way.

Three weeks later she and this stranger are running together on Saturday mornings. Six months later they’re still running together. A year later she mentions Fuel Meals to her sister, who mentions it to a friend, who subscribes.

The sister’s exact words were: My meal subscription introduced me to my best friend.

That sentence is the product. Everything Mingler does is in service of making that sentence more likely, more frequent, and more repeatable — across every brand on the platform.

VHow it works

A running club. Without the running.

Meeting other healthy people on shared values and similarity — in the most socially respectable way possible. The way joining a club has always worked, except the club is a brand you already love. One careful introduction at a time.

  1. 01

    Your brand defines the affinity

Pick a template or write your own: training buddies, life-stage match, shared goals, complementary skills. Your members see a short taste quiz the next time you invite them in. No stranger feeds, no swipe decks.

  2. 02

    We find the right pairs

One person at a time. Always anonymized, always double opt-in. The first batch for every new brand is reviewed by hand — we don’t turn on live messaging until quality is proven.

  3. 03

They meet — and remember who made it happen

When both members say yes, the intro arrives with an icebreaker written in your brand’s voice. A year later, we remind them both where it started. You get the credit you earned.

VIWhat it feels like

VIIAn invitation

We’re hand-picking the first partners.

For launch, Mingler is only working with two kinds of brands: high-end gyms and membership clubs, and health-and-wellness DTC brands running a subscription program on Shopify with Recharge or Skio.

We review every early intro by hand. We write the onboarding with the merchant. We don’t ship fast and ask forgiveness — we ship carefully and ask how it felt. If that matches how you think about your community, we’d love to talk.

Talk to us →Onboarding 1–2 new merchants per month.

Not for:

Generic DTC without a values story. Social networks. Dating apps. Anything that wants more connections instead of better ones.
